Workshops and Courses

Places are now available for the following  workshops in traditional and contemporary stained and fused glass techniques commencing January 2012. Taster days  are generally run from Studio 22 at Barleylands from 10.00-5.00 pm with a break for lunch. Some course timings vary. Please check individual course details. Refreshments are available throughout the day, but lunch is not usually provided. Participants need to attend a half day Beginners Glass Cutting session before undertaking Traditional Leading, Copper Foiling or Fusing Taster days, or must have previous experience of cutting glass. No previous experience is required to attend taster days in Mosaicing, Terrarium Making, Jewellery Box Making, Glass Casting and Enamelling.    Please email for availability. Places are confirmed on receipt of payment in full.

Students will be provided with all materials and tools and in most cases will be able to walk away with a finished product. Please wear closed toe shoes when attending workshops.  Glass From The Past workshops are fun but also offer the opportunity to learn new skills at the participants own pace.

Beginners Glass Cutting

Introductory session covering health and safety, use of tools and plenty of practice at handling and cutting glass safely. Essential for beginners before attending Copper Foiling, Leading or Fusing. Mosaicing

Terrarium Making

Under the guidance of tutor John Newstead students will create a beautiful lantern terrarium from a kit of parts and have the opportunity to learn the skills of accurate glass cutting and soldering, essential for the creation of three dimensional copper foiled items. Jewellery Box Making

Learn how to make a beautiful copper foiled jewellery box with a hinged lid. Choose from a selection of patterns. Taught by John Newstead. Costs £75.00

Glass Casting For Jewellery 

This is an exciting new taster course which runs over three consecutive Saturday mornings. Explore the techniques of creating an open faced mould and casting small pieces of glass using lead crystal. Leading

Create a small colourful leaded light panel or suncatcher using traditional techniques. Taught by Caroline Weidman.  To see examples on Facebook please click here Costs £75.00

Leaded Light Restoration

This is a 2 day course and designed for students who have already completed our leading course or who have previous experience of leaded light work.  This course grapples with the specific issues of restoring old lead light panels. Copper Foiling

Create a beautiful suncatcher using the copper foil or Tiffany method. Taught by Caroline Weidman. To see examples on Facebook please click here  Costs £75.00

Leading & Copper Foiling

Previous experience of at least one of these techniques required. Create a leaded mirror with copper foil overlay design. Taught by Caroline Weidman. To see examples on Facebook please click here Costs £75.00

Fusing

An introduction to the fascinating world of fused glass. Students will create several fused glass items during the course of the day, including a small suncatcher, fridge magnets or coasters and glass jewellery. Enamelling

An exciting new course offering an introduction into the world of enamelling on copper. Taught by Toni Peers participants will come away with several completed items including jewellery. To see examples on Facebook please click here Costs £75.00

Introduction to Flameworking (Glass Bead Making)

This is a three hour course, currently on a one to one basis with tutor Graham Brooker. Students will have the  opportunity to make their first beads in the flame. Covers health and safety issues. These courses are by arrangement only. To see examples on Facebook please click here  Costs £65.00

Torch Time

Practice on the torch making beads. Must have previous experience or had at least one introductory flameworking session with Graham. Costs £5.00 per hour plus an additional £5 per session (tools and glass provided) ie three hours costs £20.00. By arrangement with Caroline Weidman.

Regular Classes

Regular classes are for those who have attended at least one taster day and wish to develop existing skills by creating their own projects. Caroline has three regular classes covering all disciplines per week.  These are held on Tuesday nights , Friday afternoons  and on Thursday afternoons. All regular classes run in ten week blocks and cost £12 per two and a half hour session. These will recommence after Christmas in the week beginning 2nd January 2012. Studio Time

This is an opportunity for students and experienced glass artists to hire studio space without direct supervision. Costs £3.00 per hour. Hours are Thursday evenings from 6.00 to 8.30pm or by arrangement.
